The team answered detailed questions and adapted a private Morocco trip for this couple. They especially appreciated their driver and desert camp.
AksharOverview
Choose this shared ten-day route for mountain villages and Atlantic time rather than a Sahara camp. Two nights in Imlil give a full day for a guided village walk, followed by a night in the lower valley around Ouirgane. The walking stays below the summit routes: there is no Toubkal ascent or expedition camp.
An Agafay camel ride introduces the stony desert near Marrakech before the journey turns west. Three nights in Essaouira leave time for a guided introduction and a free day on the coast. The final night is back in Marrakech, keeping the departure transfer separate from the longer coastal drive.
All nine nights are in hotels at 3-star standard. Nine breakfasts, nine dinners, shared air-conditioned route transport with driver and fuel, Marrakech pickup/drop-off, the Agafay camel ride, scheduled local guiding and local visit fees are included. Lunches, drinks, flights, insurance, tips and extra activities are separate. You join a common group schedule, with a morning start on day 1; arrive the previous evening. This avoids the long eastern desert transfers, but the mountain paths still require comfortable walking on uneven ground.
Highlights
- Walk Marrakech’s medina with a local guide
- Spend two nights among the villages of Imlil
- Continue to the lower mountain valley of Ouirgane
- Take an included camel ride in stony Agafay
- Stay three nights in Essaouira
- Return to Marrakech for the final hotel night
Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech — Begin in the City’s Courtyards and Lanes
The group meets in Marrakech in the morning, so plan to arrive the previous evening. A guided visit connects the Bahia Palace, souk streets and Jemaa el-Fna area. Woodwork, carved plaster and tiled courts give a close view of decorative craft before the market lanes introduce the working medina.
Scheduled fees are included. The Koutoubia is viewed from outside in accordance with mosque access rules. Lunch is separate, and time remains to settle into the hotel before dinner. The route leaves for the mountains tomorrow rather than adding a rushed afternoon transfer.
Day 2
Marrakech to Imlil — Enter the Mountain Valleys
Drive from Marrakech toward Asni and the Imlil valley, where the road climbs into a more enclosed landscape. Terraced fields and houses following the slopes make the geography tangible before any walking begins. Practical stops divide the journey without turning it into a shopping itinerary.
Settle into the Imlil-area accommodation and take an introductory guided village walk suited to the day’s conditions. Paths may include loose surfaces, steps and short climbs; walking shoes are important. Dinner and the first of two hotel nights are here. This is a village stay, not a mountain refuge night.
Day 3
Imlil — Terraces and Village Paths Near Aroumd
A full mountain day follows paths around the Imlil and Aroumd area with a local guide. Look at irrigation channels, small cultivated plots and the relationship between stone-built villages and the valley floor. The guide adjusts the route to weather and group ability rather than promising a fixed high pass.
There are uphill sections and uneven footing, but no Toubkal summit attempt. Bring a day bag, water and layers; lunch is at your own expense. Return to the same accommodation for dinner and a second night, with no need to carry overnight luggage along the walking route.
Day 4
Imlil to Ouirgane — From Higher Villages to the Lower Valley
Leave the Imlil area by road and pass through Asni toward Ouirgane. The setting broadens as the route moves away from the higher village slopes. A guided walk on suitable local paths introduces the lower valley landscape, with terrain and weather determining the specific route.
Lunch is separate, and the afternoon leaves time to rest after the previous day’s walking. This is not a long trek between Imlil and Ouirgane: the transfer is by shared vehicle. Dinner and a hotel night in the Ouirgane area give the mountain section a different final setting.
Day 5
Ouirgane, Agafay and Marrakech — A Stony Desert Interlude
The shared vehicle leaves Ouirgane toward the Lalla Takerkoust area and Agafay. Here the open, stony hills are a different landscape from the Sahara dune fields. The included camel ride takes place in this Marrakech-region setting, with timing and route adapted to local conditions.
Tell us before booking if camel riding is difficult for you. Quad rides, pool access and a dinner show are not included in this standard stop. Continue to Marrakech for the hotel night and included dinner. The journey does not stay overnight at an Agafay camp.
Day 6
Marrakech to Essaouira — Follow the Road West
Leave Marrakech for the Atlantic across the plains and the argan-growing country nearer the coast. The road has a different rhythm from the mountain approaches, with practical pauses and a lunch break at your own expense. Wildlife sightings and compulsory purchases are not part of the promise.
At Essaouira, settle into the hotel and take an orientation walk near the port and medina edge. Blue boats, stone fortifications and sea air mark the change of setting. Dinner and the first of three nights are included, leaving more than a brief stop to explore the town.
Day 7
Essaouira — A Guided Introduction to the Port and Medina
Explore Essaouira with a local guide, linking the medina streets with the accessible seafront and the working fishing port. The town’s compact layout makes its maritime character easy to follow on foot. Watch where boats and trade meet the older walls rather than treating the port as a staged attraction.
Lunch is separate, with time afterward to return to a café or street that interests you. Local fees for scheduled visits are included; extra activities are not. Dinner and a second hotel night stay in Essaouira, without another transfer to interrupt the evening.
Day 8
Essaouira — A Free Day With the Atlantic
Today has no organized excursion or long transfer. Use the time for a beach walk, browsing the medina or returning to the port area at your own pace. The free day is deliberate: it leaves room to rest after the mountain section rather than filling every hour with another visit.
Breakfast, dinner and the third hotel night are included; lunch and any chosen activity are separate. A surf lesson, spa treatment or private outing is not part of the standard package. Wind and sea conditions can limit bathing. Keep a light layer handy for the Atlantic breeze.
Day 9
Essaouira to Marrakech — Back Before the Departure Day
A final nearby walk can fit before the shared return to Marrakech. The road crosses the coastal hinterland and plains, with a practical rest stop as needed. There is no additional distant attraction to turn this transfer into a much longer day.
Reach Marrakech for the final dinner and ninth hotel night. Spending the last night in the departure city keeps tomorrow’s transfer separate from the coast road. Evening plans are independent of the listed itinerary: a quiet nearby meal and rest may suit better than another organized activity.
Day 10
Marrakech — Breakfast and Departure
The journey finishes with breakfast and the included local Marrakech drop-off. Any time before the transfer is free, without a further guided visit scheduled. Keep documents, medication and onward travel details accessible.
Arrange the transfer time and a vehicle-access meeting point with the team using your departure information. This circuit ends where it began, in Marrakech. An onward transfer to Casablanca or another city is separate and needs enough extra time outside the ten-day programme.
