The team answered detailed questions and adapted a private Morocco trip for this couple. They especially appreciated their driver and desert camp.
AksharOverview
This Marrakech loop is for travelers who want the Sahara and an Atlantic stay in the same holiday. Start with a guided city day, cross the High Atlas toward Dadès and continue to Merzouga. One camp night and one hotel night there leave a day without a long transfer, rather than turning straight back after sunrise.
A night near Aït Benhaddou breaks the western return before Marrakech. The coast follows: two nights in Essaouira create a full day for the port, medina and seafront. The ninth night is back in Marrakech, so the final airport transfer does not follow a drive from the coast.
All nine nights are included: eight at 3-star hotel standard and one at a 4-star camp. The package also includes nine breakfasts, nine dinners, shared air-conditioned transport with driver and fuel, Marrakech pickup/drop-off, the camel ride, scheduled guiding and local visit fees. Lunches, drinks, flights, insurance, tips and added activities are separate. This remains a shared road tour: dune nights, mountain passes and Atlantic walking do not remove the long driving stages between them.
Highlights
- Start and finish in Marrakech with a final city night
- Cross the High Atlas to the Dadès Valley
- Spend two nights in the Merzouga area
- Take the included camel ride and sleep at camp
- Visit Aït Benhaddou after a nearby overnight
- Give Essaouira a full day between two nights
Itinerary
Day 1
Marrakech — Meeting the Group in the Medina
Join the group in Marrakech in the morning, having arrived the previous evening. A local guide introduces the Bahia Palace, souk streets and the surroundings of Jemaa el-Fna. Look closely at the palace’s woodwork and tile decoration before moving into the busier commercial lanes.
The Koutoubia is viewed from outside, respecting the mosque’s access rules. Fees for the scheduled visits are included, with lunch at your own expense. There is time to settle into the accommodation rather than adding a distant excursion. Dinner and the first hotel night are in Marrakech.
Day 2
Marrakech to Dadès — Over the Mountains
Leave Marrakech for the winding High Atlas road. Villages and cultivated slopes interrupt the rocky scenery as the route climbs toward Tizi n’Tichka. Road conditions and comfort stops set the day’s pace; this is a full transfer rather than a morning outing.
Beyond Ouarzazate, continue through the southern valley corridor toward the Dadès area. Palms, earthen settlements and narrow green fields stand against dry hills. Aït Benhaddou is saved for the return stage, so today is not crowded with a second ksar visit. Dinner and a hotel night await in Dadès.
Day 3
Dadès to Merzouga — Todra and the Dune Edge
The road reaches Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where a short walk beside the river brings the limestone walls into scale. The approach also reveals irrigated gardens and palms, a reminder that these valleys are lived and cultivated landscapes. Closed shoes help on the uneven ground.
Travel onward toward Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. The included camel ride follows arrival and daylight conditions; its exact timing can vary. Dinner and the camp night complete the stage. Pack a small overnight bag and raise any difficulty with camel riding before booking.
Day 4
Merzouga — A Day Without Changing Region
The extra day begins with breakfast at camp, then moves to the Merzouga village area. Spend time on foot near the settlement and along the dune edge, where hard ground gives way to sand. It is a chance to understand the setting beyond the camp approach.
Lunch is at your own expense, with time for rest during the day. Quads and buggies are additional activities rather than included excursions. Tonight’s dinner and accommodation are at a 3-star hotel in the Merzouga area. The route includes two nights here, but only one is a camp night.
Day 5
Merzouga to Aït Benhaddou — Across the Southern Valleys
Leave the dunes for a long westbound road stage through the southern interior, via Alnif, N’Kob and Agdz. Dry plains, rocky ridges and cultivated oasis strips alternate along the route. Practical stops and a lunch pause divide the drive; the itinerary does not promise extended visits at every town passed.
Continue through the Ouarzazate area to accommodation near Aït Benhaddou. Dinner and a hotel night here place the ksar visit on the following morning, before the Atlas crossing. That separation gives the earthen settlement more attention than a late stop at the end of this driving day.
Day 6
Aït Benhaddou to Marrakech — Earthen Lanes and the Atlas
Visit Aït Benhaddou on foot, climbing between houses, walls and towers above the riverbed. The closely packed earth-built structures explain why the ksar is read as a whole settlement rather than a single kasbah. Steps and uneven surfaces call for secure footwear.
The road then crosses the High Atlas back toward Marrakech, with weather and traffic shaping the arrival. There is no requirement to rush through the mountain stage for a same-day flight. Dinner and a hotel night are included in Marrakech before the coastal part of the journey begins.
Day 7
Marrakech to Essaouira — Turning Toward the Atlantic
Head west from Marrakech across the plains toward the Atlantic. The transfer replaces high mountain passes with more open country and the argan-growing landscape closer to the coast. Stops are practical pauses, without promising animal sightings or a compulsory shopping visit.
On arrival in Essaouira, an orientation walk takes in the port and the edge of the medina. Fishing boats, sea walls and the wind give the place a different rhythm from the desert. Lunch is separate. Dinner and the first of two hotel nights are in Essaouira.
Day 8
Essaouira — Port, Medina and Seafront Time
A full day on the coast avoids turning Essaouira into a lunch stop between transfers. Walk the medina streets, look toward the working fishing port and follow the accessible seafront areas. The compact layout makes it possible to return to a café or shop without a long drive.
Part of the day is free for your own pace, with lunch at your own expense. Beach time does not include a surf lesson, and wind or sea conditions may limit bathing. Dinner and a second night in Essaouira are included. Bring a layer: Atlantic wind can feel cool even when Marrakech is warm.
Day 9
Essaouira to Marrakech — A Last Night Before Departure
Use the morning for a final nearby walk before the shared return to Marrakech. The route heads inland through the coastal hinterland and plains, with a rest stop as needed. This is the return transfer, not another full day of organized activities in Essaouira.
Back in Marrakech, settle in for the final dinner and ninth night. Having the last night in the departure city leaves a clearer departure morning than driving directly from the coast to a flight. Any additional evening activity is separate from the listed programme.
Day 10
Marrakech — Departure Transfer
Breakfast is included before the final Marrakech drop-off. Use any free interval for something close to the accommodation and keep documents readily available. No extra city excursion is scheduled on this final day.
The team arranges the transfer time and vehicle-access meeting point from your departure details. The loop ends in Marrakech, where it began; it does not include an onward intercity transfer. If you plan to leave Morocco from another airport, arrange that journey separately with enough additional time.
