Itinerary

Day 1

Marrakech to Agdz — Across the Atlas into the Draa Valley

Marrakech to Agdz — Across the Atlas into the Draa Valley

Leaving Marrakech, the shared vehicle climbs into the High Atlas, where the road bends between mountain slopes and villages. Viewpoint and comfort stops break the crossing, but this remains a travel day rather than a walking excursion. Keep a layer handy: conditions at the pass can be quite different from the city.

At Aït Benhaddou, time on foot reveals the lanes, towers and earthen walls of the ksar. The settlement’s position beside an old caravan corridor helps explain why trade between southern Morocco and Marrakech passed through this landscape. Comfortable shoes help on the uneven paths; any climb should match your ability and the group’s visit time.

The road continues through Ouarzazate and toward Agdz. Palms and cultivated strips begin to soften the dry valley floor, while earthen settlements stand above them. Dinner and an overnight in Agdz give the journey a pause before tomorrow’s longer transition from oasis towns to desert tracks.

Day 2

Agdz to Erg Chigaga — Oasis Life, M’Hamid and the Desert Tracks

Agdz to Erg Chigaga — Oasis Life, M’Hamid and the Desert Tracks

The Draa Valley leads south past palms, small fields and villages toward Zagora. At Tamegroute, visit the pottery workshops and old Quranic school. Seeing the workshops does not mean taking a pottery class: the interest lies in observing the craft, its materials and the place it holds in the village.

M’Hamid is the final village before the desert tracks on this route. A visit introduces its oasis setting before the specialist 4x4 carries the group across increasingly open ground. Progress is slower and bumpier than on the road. The changing surfaces—stone, sand and scattered vegetation—are part of the journey, not an empty transfer.

At Erg Chigaga, an included camel ride brings you closer to the dunes before dinner and the camp night. A meeting with nomadic hosts and a sand-baked bread demonstration introduce practical desert knowledge. Respect the hosts’ space and ask before taking portraits. The night is at the 4-star camp; the surrounding dunes, rather than a promised entertainment schedule, are the focus.

Day 3

Erg Chigaga to Marrakech — Iriki, Foum Zguid and the Mountain Return

Erg Chigaga to Marrakech — Iriki, Foum Zguid and the Mountain Return

There is time to look toward the dunes in the early light before breakfast and departure. The group leaves the sand behind by 4x4 toward the Iriki region and Foum Zguid, where broad dry landscapes make the scale of the desert especially clear. The driver chooses tracks according to current ground conditions; weather can require a safer alternative.

Beyond Foum Zguid, the return crosses southern Morocco toward Taznakht and the High Atlas. Lunch is a separate expense, and practical breaks divide a long day of travel. This is not an extra day in the dunes: most of it is spent making the substantial journey back to Marrakech.

Arrival is in the evening, with the exact time affected by tracks, traffic and mountain conditions. Keep that evening free of a tight flight or train connection. Drop-off in Marrakech completes the shared circuit that began with the Atlas crossing two days earlier.

FAQ

Is this a shared tour or a private 4x4 journey?
It is a shared group tour. You travel with other guests on a common route and timetable, including the specialist 4x4 desert section. The standard departure does not provide a private vehicle or individually chosen stops.
Are departures daily, and is there a four-person minimum?
Daily departures are guaranteed. The older four-person minimum does not apply to this MTM offer.
Where are the two overnight stops?
The first night is in 3-star accommodation in Agdz. The second is at a 4-star camp at Erg Chigaga. Zagora is a stop on the route, not the first overnight.
Is the camel ride included?
Yes. The camel ride at Erg Chigaga is included. Tell us before booking if riding is unsuitable for you so we can discuss your needs without assuming a particular alternative.
Which meals and transport are included?
Two dinners and two breakfasts, the shared road transport with driver and fuel, the specialist desert 4x4 section, and Marrakech pickup and drop-off are included. Lunches and drinks are separate.
How demanding is the route?
Expect substantial driving on days one and three and bumpy off-road travel between M’Hamid, Erg Chigaga and the Foum Zguid side. It is not a trekking itinerary, but uneven ground and vehicle access require reasonable mobility. Discuss back problems, pregnancy or limited mobility before booking.
Does the route always cross Iriki?
The planned return goes toward Iriki and Foum Zguid. Rain, sand or track conditions can change the crossing; the driver may use a safer route. No dry-lake crossing is promised regardless of weather.
What should I pack, and can I fly out that evening?
Bring a compact bag, closed shoes, sun protection, water for personal use and layers for temperature changes. Keep travel documents accessible. Avoid a time-sensitive flight on the return evening because the journey back is long.
